Curriculum vitae

Javier Sanchez Galan, PhD.

Research Objective:
I am a bio/chemo-infomatician with interest in innovative approaches for bridging computational and data analysis approaches for biology, chemistry and medicine.

Current Topics of Research:
- Discovery of Biomarker and Biopattern (Biosignature) in biological fluids
- Machine learning and multivariate analysis applied to spectral signals (Mass Spectrometry, Near-infrared Spectroscopy, EEG)

Current Interest:

  • Optimization in Python
  • Smart devices for m-health
  • Knowledge representation in System biology

Current Affiliations:
Since August 2013, I am a research scientist at Universidad Tecnológica de Panama affiliated with the Grupo de Investigación en Biotecnología, Bioinformática y Biología de Sistemas (GIBBS) at the Centro de Producción e Investigaciones Agroindustriales - (CEPIA).  Since February 2015, I am a also an adjunct researcher at Institute of Scientific Research and High Technology Services (INDICASAT-AIP).

Bio: In the fall-winter 2014 I finished my Ph.D. in the Division of Experimental Medicine at McGill University, in Montreal, Canada, where I was part of the Laboratory for Biomedical Informatics, Imaging and Spectroscopy, I worked under the supervision of Professors David Burns (Chemistry) and Kris Koski (School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition). This research effort was focused in investigating various statistical and computational approaches for the discovery of candidate spectral regions relating maternal-fetal health aspects to biological fluids analyzed using Near-Infrared spectroscopy. Here is a link to my PhD Thesis "Application of near-infrared spectroscopy and chemoinformatic analyses to biological fluids for the assessment of maternal and fetal health status".

In 2010, I got my MSc in Computer Science (Bioinformatics) at the McGill Centre for Bioinformatics, under the supervision of Prof. Mathieu Blanchette. Our work was in the area of Genomics, specifically in Computational Gene Regulation. Here is a link to my MSc. Thesis "Large Scale Identification of Transcription Factor Binding Sites in DNA Sequences".

Way before that, in 2006, I obtained my BSc in Computer Systems Engineering from the Universidad Tecnologica de Panama, I worked in the Intelligent Systems Unit under the supervision of Prof. Victor Lopez. Our work was in the area of Distributed Artificial Intelligence, specifically our work focused in the Interoperability between two Mobile Agent Systems (SeMoA and JADE). Here is a link to my BSc. Thesis "Interoperabilidad de Agentes Moviles".
